A year like no other
As I write this, 2020 is nearly in the books. What a year. A Super Bowl victory, the “first wave” of the pandemic, conserving PPE, school and business shutdowns, The CARES Act and Paycheck Protection Program, hybrid school, the census, protests and demonstrations demanding racial inequities and injustices be addressed, the election, the “second wave” of the pandemic… yes, 2020 has been a year unlike any other.
With all of this as a backdrop, the business community, which plays such an important part of the broader Overland Park community, has persevered. Through your innovation, you have found new ways to get work done and do business with customers, both at home and afar. You have navigated numerous obstacles and challenges related to regulations and assistance programs. And you have supported each other and this community as you always do. I am as proud as I have ever been to be a part of the Overland Park Chamber and this community of engaged business leaders.
The Chamber headed into 2020 with a newly revised vision statement: “The Overland Park Chamber is the bold voice for business – the resource, advocate, convener and change-maker – that drives economic success forward in our city, county and state.” Many times vision statements are aspirational, but ours was put to the test immediately. The Chamber’s COVID-19 online resources proved invaluable for businesses seeking to navigate an uncertain terrain. Chamber staff were in regular communication with governmental representatives at all levels, advocating for responsible, business-friendly positions. The Chamber’s programming moved online nearly overnight and groups were convened to make connections, learn about candidates for elected office, and discuss critical topics related to our new normal.
2020 has been a year unlike any other. As business leaders, you have proven you were up to its challenges. As chamber members, you have been witnesses to the tremendous value the chamber provides. And this is why #WeOPChamber.
