Chamber joins coalition advocating to protect federal research funding

Overland Park, Kan., June 26, 2025 – Recognizing the economic impact of federal research funding to the Kansas City region, the Overland Park Chamber has joined more than 70 other chambers from 33 states in relaunching the Business for Federal Research Coalition (BFRC).

The primary goal of the BFRC is to present a united voice of the nation’s business community in advocating for robust federal research funding.

A nonpartisan coalition of business organizations from red, blue, and purple states, the Coalition will engage members of Congress and the Administration to explain how research funding strengthens our nation’s economy and competitiveness. Investments in research lead to major breakthroughs in innovation, new technologies, life-saving medical treatments, and millions of jobs. By continuing to invest in research and development funding, our country will continue to lead the world in science, job creation, medicine, and innovation.

“The work being done as a result of this funding helps us draw the nation’s preeminent researchers and clinicians to this area and residents in the region benefit from having access to some of the most advanced and promising medical treatments in the country,” explained Kevin Walker, Chamber Executive Vice President and Chief Policy Officer.

In 2025, the National Institute of Health (NIH) reported awarding more than $50 million in research grants to Kansas-based institutions, with $40 million of that just within the 3rd Congressional District.

In 2024, NIH research awards supported more than 400,000 jobs across the United States.

NIH grants supported $94.5 billion in economic activity – more than twice the $36.9 billion it distributed in grants in 2024, and for every $1 invested in NIH research, $2.56 of new economic activity is created.

“While the economic impact of research funding is huge, you simply cannot overlook the life-saving therapies and technology being uncovered every day by the funded research. We are proud to stand with our colleagues across the nation in advocating for this critical funding,” Walker said.
