Chamber Board Endorses County Public Safety Sales Tax Renewal
Overland Park, Kan., July 9, 2025 – The Overland Park Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has endorsed the renewal of a quarter-cent countywide sales tax dedicated to public safety proposed by the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners.
The proposed renewal of the sales tax will appear on all Johnson County ballots in November. If approved, the tax would renew for another ten years beginning in April 2027.
Originally approved by Johnson County voters in 2016, the Public Safety Sales Tax was used in part to fund construction of a new county courthouse and a medical examiner facility. That tax is scheduled to expire in March 2027.
The renewed tax is projected to generate $54 million annually with 64% of the money going to the County and 36% split among the cities in Johnson County.
Johnson County proposes using money derived from the renewed tax for new vehicles and equipment, upgraded 911 dispatch system, body cameras for EMS workers, additional safety personnel plus new and upgraded med-act stations.
The Chamber Board endorsed this proposal to ensure our public safety infrastructure and service are equipped to meet the demand of a growing and aging population.
